Things just keep getting worse for Christian McCaffrey and the San Francisco 49ers. The standout running back will be placed on injured reserve because of the knee injury he suffered during Sunday night’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, the 49ers announced Monday.

McCaffrey’s placement on IR means he must miss at least four games. He faces a recovery period of approximately six weeks, Coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters, for the posterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered in his right knee. The 49ers have five games remaining and may miss the playoffs, meaning McCaffrey’s season could be over.
