Cornelius McDonald launched a nonprofit called <a href="https://www.staysolid.org/" target=_blank>Stay Solid</a> to address youth violence soon after his brother was fatally shot five years ago in Northwest Washington. The organization’s president said McDonald had recently toured six high schools in Maryland, and had more to go.

Early Saturday, McDonald, 33, became a victim of the  violence he had devoted his life to preventing, when police said he was fatally shot outside a restaurant in Largo, in Prince George’s County.

The nonprofit’s school tour, called “Motivating our future,” had been based on McDonald’s life story, and Viktor Valenté, the organization’s president, said the program will have to pivot when it resumes. “How do I even say to kids, ‘No to gun violence,’ and my best friend was killed?” Valenté said.

Lachelle Harrison said McDonald, Stay Solid’s founder and executive director, “put his heart and soul into the nonprofit,” and “to see this tragic death for someone who gave up everything to make his community better is gut-wrenching.”

Harrison, 40, said her cousin’s work will continue: “He has left his legacy and we will step up to the plate.”

Prince George’s County police said McDonald, who lived in Upper Marlboro, graduated from Eleanor Roosevelt High School and had a 7-year-old son, was shot about 12:45 a.m. outside a restaurant in the 9600 block of Lottsford Road in Largo. A County Council member identified the restaurant as Jasper’s. Police said they are investigating whether McDonald and another person had been involved in an altercation. No arrest has been made.

Wala Blegay, who represents District 6 on the council, said in a statement that McDonald’s death “has shaken our community.” She said of McDonald, who grew up in the District and moved to the county when he was in high school: The region has “lost a beloved leader” whose “dedication to uplifting others has left a lasting legacy.”

Valenté said he last saw McDonald last week and that McDonald had gone to Jasper’s to meet some friends Friday night. He said he also heard from his conversations with police that the shooting followed some sort of argument. He said it was unlike McDonald to let a dispute escalate.

McDonald started Stay Solid Youth Behavioral Health Awareness Inc. after his brother, 24-year-old Devin Butler, was <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/dc-man-yells-im-zeus-im-allah-after-allegedly-shooting-friend-in-apartment-according-to-court-papers/2019/06/18/f1c449d0-91f3-11e9-aadb-74e6b2b46f6a_story.html" target="_blank">fatally shot</a> inside an apartment in Tyler House on North Capitol Street in June 2019. Police arrested an acquaintance who they said suffered mental health issues. Court records shows the suspect was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Stay Solid seeks to teach youth how to avoid gun violence but also conflict resolution and how to face mental and behavioral health issues.

Valenté<b> </b>said school tours and work are being paused but will resume. “I’m trying to find the appropriate words for our kids,” Valenté said. “I want to speak to them in a way that is protecting their mental health, and not just saying he’s gone.”

McDonald’s nonprofit was also involved in the District, Valenté said, raising money for school sports teams for travel and uniforms.

Harrison described her cousin as the family’s “heartbeat,” the “patriarch in training,” and said he attended every family event and was at every one of his son’s football games.

She said he once encountered a homeless man and sat with him outside a convenience store. He cut the man’s hair, bought him food, gave him a sweatshirt and talked with him, she said. She said Stay Solid created “nurturing bags” with sweatshirts and blankets and distributed them to homeless encampments throughout the District during the pandemic.

McDonald focusing much of his outreach on mental health, Harrison said, telling those he mentored, “'It’s okay to say you’re not okay.”
