An armed man died Saturday in the Laurel area of Howard County, Maryland, after exchanging gunfire with officers during a confrontation, according to the county police and the state attorney general’s office.

The police said it had not been determined whether the man was killed by the officers’ gunfire or by his own weapon, and they described the matter as a “suspected police-involved fatal shooting.”

Officers first responded to the home in the 10000 block of American Pharoah Lane in the Laurel area of the county after a 911 caller reported that a man was banging on the front door, according to a statement from the Maryland attorney general’s office’s Independent Investigations Division, which is reviewing the shooting.

Describing the incident as “domestic,” the office said an early investigation showed the man fired several shotgun rounds at the door, then made his way inside the home through a window.

When officers arrived around 3:10 p.m. they found “a female victim” perched on an upper ledge outside the house, the police said. The female victim was not described further.

The attorney general’s office said that the man appeared in a second-floor window of the home. When he “repeatedly refused to drop the weapon,” two officers fired, the police said in a statement released early Sunday. The attorney general’s office said two officers and the man “exchanged gunfire.”

After that, the attorney general’s office said, police established a barricade at the home. They entered later‚ about 5:40 p.m., when they were unable to make contact with the man, the attorney general’s office said.

Police found him dead, with an apparent gunshot wound, and there were several loaded firearms and a knife near him, the attorney general’s office said. No one else was injured during the incident, the office said.

The man who died was not named, and the officers’ identities were not released immediately. The attorney general’s office said it generally releases the identities of those involved in such incidents within two business days.

The attorney general’s office said the officers on the scene had body-worn cameras, which recorded the incident. It said it generally releases such footage within 20 business days of an incident, though investigators sometimes need more time to complete interviews or sort through technical matters.

The site of the incident is about a half-mile north of the racing oval at the Laurel Park racetrack. The area is near the boundary between northeastern Prince George’s County and southeastern Howard.
