A group of past and present local officials gathered on Nov. 19 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of home rule in the District. To no one’s surprise, their expressions of appreciation were all about themselves (the D.C. Council, mainly). I would like to use this Thanksgiving holiday to express gratitude for the unsung heroes of D.C. self-government: advisory neighborhood commissioners.
