At least 56 people were killed and an unknown number of others were injured during a crush of fans at a soccer match Sunday in Guinea, according to government officials in the West African country.

The clash between fans and security appeared to erupt over a disputed penalty during the match in Nzerekore, the southern area’s largest city, and escalated when security used tear gas to try to restore calm. Social media video of the chaos showed fans in a section shouting and protesting just before the violence caused them to scale a wall to try to escape.
