With Black Friday around the corner, shoppers are gearing up to take advantage of sales ahead of the holiday season.

But what’s saved through discounts is offset by environmental costs, experts say, making Black Friday one of the most wasteful holidays of the year.

Bolstered by early Christmas spending and adrift in packaging, holiday spenders set records in each of the past two years, according to the National Retail Federation. In 2023, 200.4 million people went shopping over the five-day weekend that begins on Thanksgiving and ends on Cyber Monday.
